A-5004-1931 – Renishaw measuring pin
This measuring pin with an M2 ruby ball has a ball made of silicon nitride. It is pin number A-5004-1931.
Silicon nitride has many properties similar to ruby. It is a very hard and wear-resistant ceramic that can be machined with very high precision to create perfectly spherical shapes. It can also be polished to an exceptionally smooth surface. Silicon nitride does not exhibit attraction to aluminum, so there is no adhesive wear phenomenon observed with ruby in similar applications. However, silicon nitride exhibits significant abrasive properties when scanning steel surfaces, so its use is best
restricted to aluminum.
